James Hope

James Hope (1801-1847) was initially in partnership with Gavin Gass, trading as Gass & Hope at the Annan Brewery. Around 1836 the partnership was dissolved, and James built his own brewery next door.

James was declared bankrupt in 1841 and his brewery was offered for sale or let. He died in Knaresborough in 1847.

James Hope's brewery was located near the river Annan, which gave it easy access to the Solway Firth for the shipping of its products.
