Falkirk

Historical County: Stirlingshire

Modern County: Falkirk

The brewers were one of the ten recognised trades in Falkirk and provided two of the Stentmasters in the town. The Stentmasters represented the interests of local merchants and craftsmen, and also set the stent, which was effectively a local tax, that should be paid by the people of the town for common services. In 1888 Falkirk had two licensed brewers who between them consumed over 54,000 bushels (i.e. ~820 tons) of malt, the bulk of it by James Aitken & Co (Falkirk) Ltd - one of Scotland's most illustrious brewing companies. It also had ten victuallers who were licensed to brew their own beer.
