A brewery in Mill Vennel (later Mill Street) is shown on a 1775 map published by A. & M. Armstrong of Edinburgh. It is not yet known who established the brewery, but it was occupied by the partnership of James Ramsay & Co from about 1803 to 1809. The buildings were no longer marked as a brewery on John Wood's map of 1818.
