The partnership of John Ramsay & Co was formed by John Ramsay and Robert Bowman in about 1803. The business operated from a brewery in Mill Vennel until the partnership was dissolved in 1809. John eventually established a new brewery on land that he leased in St Quivox Parish, while Robert probably moved to Paisley and formed Robert Bowman & Co.

A brewery in Mill Vennel is shown on a 1775 map published by A. & M. Armstrong of Edinburgh. It is not yet known who established the brewery, but it was occupied by the partnership of John Ramsay & Co from about 1803 to 1809.
