The first statistical account of Scotland states that in 1745 there was "a gentleman in Easter Wemyss, who carries on a considerable brewery", while the Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland of 1882 notes that there was "a small brewery at East Wemyss, but the chief industry of the place is the manufacture of ducks, dowlas, sheetings, and dyed linens".
