The village of Laurencekirk was extensively re-modelled as an industrial community by Lord Gardenston, after he acquired the Johnston Estate in 1759. He introduced a number of industries to the village, including weaving and box-making. The Laurencekirk Brewery was established in the 19th century and was one of the longest surviving country breweries in Scotland.
