Lanarkshire was historically the county with the largest population, and that was reflected in the number of brewing business that were established in the 19th century. Glasgow was the largest brewing centre with more than a dozen substantial brewing businesses at its peak, but there were also significant breweries in towns such as Airdrie, Bishopbriggs and Cambuslang.
