Alexander Manson in all probability established the Thurso Brewery.

However, a contemporary account noted that "the population is too scanty to afford sufficient demand for a regular business in the brewery line", and he had been declared bankrupt by 1805.

Breweries and other buildings

The Thurso Brewery was established in 1798 making it the most northerly brewery on mainland Scotland.

After Alexander was declared bankrupt the brewery was put to use as a distillery.

Part of the site was recently cleared for car parking, but two buildings have been converted to housing.
