John Stocks acquired a mill from William Adam on the Tiel Burn and converted it into what became known as the West Bridge Brewery. John was the first of five generations of the family to operate the brewery, ending with John Laing Stocks who sold the business to William Thompson Leishman. The brewery was also referred to as the Invertiel Brewery, Leishman's Brewery, and the Bridgeton Brewery.

After WIlliam Thompson Leishman died in 1905 the brewery was put up for sale and eventually acquired by James Rintoul, who converted it to a aerated water The brewery was bought by local builder James Rintoul in 1908 and converted into an aerated water works. The site has since been cleared for a modern housing development.
