Greenock

Historical County: Renfrewshire

Modern County: Inverclyde

A public brewery was known to exist in Greenock as early as 1707, and the revenue from the associated malt tax was sufficient to support the building of the town's quays. The first private brewery was erected in Sugarhouse Lane by Samuel Taylor. There were three substantial breweries in the town in the first half of the 19th century but none of these survived beyond the 1860s.
