James Brown took over the family business at the Dunfermline Brewery from his father William in 1861, and established the firm of James Brown and Son. In 1873 James acquired the brewery from the trustees of Alexander Kilgour's estate, and by the late 19th century the business was employing eleven men. James died in 1896 and the business ceased operations shorty after.

The Dunfermline Brewery was in existence from at least the early 1800s and ran from the High Street south to Canmore Street.
It was owned by John Kilgour from at least 1811, and then by his son Alexander, before it was acquired by James Brown in 1873. It ceased operations after James died and was described as empty in 1904.
